Luckily, I haven't had any of the problems cited by the other reviewers. It's basically the same as the 2015 version with new fonts and colors - and I'm OK with that. The price tag is a hard pill to swallow, particularly after paying half as much for 33% longer support for the previous upgrades. Because of the price hike and negative reviews, I seriously considered other products.
I used Quicken 2007 for home and business (Windows version) for 10 years. Tried the upgrade to 2011 but went back to 2007 version as new features were just complications. Now we have switched to Mac computers and bought 2017 Quicken for Mac. Hugely disappointed, can’t even print a reconciliation statement along with the illogical interfaces. In Quicken 2010 for Windows, I can enter the dividends and capital gains for a given fund and date all in one window; in the Mac 2017 version, however, I must go the through the process multiple times to get the same result (e.g., once for a dividend, a second time for a short-term capital gain, and a third time for a long-term capital gain).
Nothing else seems robust enough for my needs, which include almost a dozen actual accounts and 10 additional 'asset' accounts for accruals. Before upgrading, I backed up my Quicken file and took a snapshot of my balances. No changes noted. All my saved reports and auto-fill vendors are still there. Downsides: I had to type my Quicken ID 2 times, password 3 times, and code-from-text-message 2 times.
That was the worst part of the upgrade. I also dislike the elimination of text captions for icons on the top banner - what do all these icons mean? Other than that, it's still the same indispensable (fun?) number-cruncher I'm used to. Bottom line: it's still a great product, but the price is steep and upgrade process is a little clunky. I try to stay from writing reviews on Amazon but this program is so awful that I overcame my natural aversion to writing reviews to log in and write one. I have been using Quicken since 1995. I have faithfully updated my version every year to support the product and to stay current on the versions.
I did this even though for what I need to do there has been no visible increase in utility in this program for quite some time. Just like many other users I have watched the ownership transfer at Quicken - suspicious that a hedge fund is the new owner now - but willing to give it a chance. This program does not work a very basic level. I cannot log into my file. It worked yesterday and it does not work today.
There is virtually no support available on the Quicken website - I have been waiting to 'chat live' for over 30min now (the web page said the wait time was 6min). I object to the fact that I need to log into my Web Quicken account every time I want to open my file. But even if I was ok with that, now it doesn't work. I get a blank screen with the word 'Success' written across it - and everything else is blank.
Please understand, I am not only upset that the file is not working this one time. This is a culmination of many things leading me to this review. I specifically DO NOT WANT TO LOG INTO THE INTERNET with my financial data. I do not understand why I am REQUIRED to log into my online Quicken account every time I want to open my financial data on my own computer with software that is located on my own computer (obviously if you want to update stock prices, etc. It is necessary to connect to the internet but I want to have the option to open the file on my computer without the internet - and in any case, I am connected to the internet now and it stiff does not work). If you disconnect your computer from the internet, you can't open your file at all. In my case, even if you are connected to the internet, I still can't open the file.
The support on their website is AWFUL. You can't send them a message, I do not seem to be able to talk to them via chat, and they charge money for help over the phone. It is not even worth going into a review of Quicken's features because (a) they haven't changed for a long time, and (b) it really doesn't matter since all I am dealing with is the inability to even log into my file. Even before this happened today, every time I logged in it would tell me I had successfully logged in - only to pop up the login screen again, as if I hadn't logged in at all. Resetting passwords or setting up new user IDs didn't seem to make a difference. My advice to new users: do not spend any time entering your data into this application.
Instead, look for alternatives. I challenge Quicken to respond to this review.
Tell me I'm wrong. Tell me that you have not been inundated by users whose software (that they pay for) does not work. Tell me that Quicken users have responded positively to the support you provide.
Tell me that there haven't been tons of issues with the log-in. To add insult to injury Quicken has set up a 'Community' area of the website where they have provided a space for users to help each other, i.e. To provide the help that Quicken itself does not seem to want to staff up to do. Your existing Quicken account cannot be linked to this purchase. Who knows why that is but nevertheless, you have to effectively 'start over' with Quicken.com. It's a multi-step, frustration-filled process where Quicken makes it known you, the purchaser, are completely at fault for not having purchased Quicken at quicken.com. How dare you!
There are exactly zero improvements between 2016 Premier and 2018 Premier. Well there is one change: Although I knew this going in, the price doubled. Oh, and annoying things got added like 'Link it Now', which is even more annoying.
And the UI is a train wreck of conflicting. Well, everything. Nearly impossible to read without a headache.
Still doesn't display correctly on high-resolution monitors. Those fancy laptops that have existed for 10 years now. Conversion of 2016 to 2018 data doesn't work. Account balances don't match between the two products.
Quicken For Mac Help
I validated the file before the upgrade and it found no problems. That's about par for the course but it would have been nice to see. Since it is Quicken 2018 one would think maybe the Tax Planner would support 2018? This is kind of a big reason to, you know, PLAN. Apparently not to Quicken. RANDOM ADVERTISING EVERYWHERE.
Half the registers now have an advertisement (1/3 of the height of your screen) extolling the virtues of 'Zillow' (don't know why that's relevant in my 'Cash' account but whatever). Close the advertising down and sure enough, it re-appears the next time you start Quicken 2018. I have history back to 2001. Press after entering a transaction, wait 2 seconds. May not seem like much but using it is a nightmare.
Quicken 2016 was maybe 1/2 second. Still pretty awful but about normal for Quicken performance. Switching accounts takes 3 seconds.
Garbage product to be avoided. Returning it, such as a 'downloaded' product can be returned. Getting money back anyway. It would be better spent elsewhere with a company that deserves it.
Converted easily enough from Quicken 2017, but still has the same problem with high resolution screens that it always has. I can't believe they haven't fixed this yet. The register windows won't display properly on high resolution screens.
Looks and performs exactly the same as the 2017 version so not worth the upgrade. The application crashes almost every session.
All of a sudden one day when I opened the application, the budget that I had spent hours creating had disappeared, along with several years of budget history. Don't waste your money or your time. The quality of this software is very low and you will be very frustrated. I've been a long time Quicken user, since 1999.
I had a PC for all those years, until 2012, when I bought an iMac. I love the iMac and will never go back to a Windows based PC. I continued to use the Windows version, because you can run windows apps on a Mac using 'bootcamp'. I've been using Quicken 2015 (for Windows), but when I got an email saying Q2015 would stop being supported for 'online' downloads, I thought I would try the 2018 version for Mac. I bought the PC/Mac download here on Amazon.
I installed the Mac version, and converted my data files. To make a long story short, The Mac version didn't begin to compare with the previous Q2015 version for Windows!
I don't understand why Quicken can't/won't make the Mac version function like the Windows version? I have deleted the Mac version, and the Windows version is as good, or better, than the previous 'windows' version. It's really too bad that Quicken can't produce a Mac Version that compares with the Windows version. It would be a pleasant surprise if they did! Yes - they bait you with the 'bill pay included' in the subscription.
This is a complete mess 'due to the unanticipated demand of the 2018 version'. Not only can you not get signed up in reasonable time (2-weeks and still working on it), but here is what you need to get registered: - Identify 2 deposits in the identified bank accounts - a copy of a blank check for the associated bank account - a copy of your drivers license - a copy of a recent bill in your name and current address - a copy of a valid social security card Note - Not one of the above but ALL of the above. If you can not produce and FAX (yes fax) ALL of the above to a strange fax number - you don't get the bill pay. And here's the kicker.
Since you start the bill pay service while they are 'processing' your faxes, the bill pay service charges you the first month (against the bank account you just gave them, but yet 'unverified') of $9.95 regardless if you have it as part of quicken. The free Quicken starts only after Quicken registers to the service and this can not happen until ALL of the above is satisfied at their pace of approval.
I'm on 7 days and still counting.Caution - this is a very broken and dangerous process -I can not imagine who is behind the wheel on this one deciding they need that much personal information faxed to a fax account spewing paper into a bin. And they have the nerve to call the software '2018' laughable.
I have been a Quicken user since it first hit the market. I have been a Quicken Billpay (QBP) user since it first was available. I have been a beta tester for previous Quicken products. My current experience with both of the products as part of Quicken Premier subscription has been abysmal. In other words, my experience with Quicken has been over 20 years.
I'm not a novice. My comments will be will be given per product. First - Quicken Premier 2018 software: Despite the fact that I select bills to pay by paper check on the home screen and print the checks, they are not removed from the home screen. In other words, in the software they appear as not having been paid.
I worked with the Premier tech support provided with the software and they fixed the problem when I called them, but it was not a permanent fix. The next time I selected bills and paid them by printing a paper check, they were not removed from the home screen after I printed the checks. Second - Quicken Billpay: I have 'old' QBP and I have been attempting to create a 'new' QBP account for over a month. QBP continues to charge me monthly for the 'old' Billpay account until the 'new' account is established. Despite the fact that I've successfully used the product for many years, QBP is asking for a great deal of personal information to establish the 'new' account.
Information that they already have since I have an established QBP account. They want you to either fax or mail enough personal information to completely steal your identity (e.g. Copies of drivers license, copies of social security card, proof of birthday, copies of utility bill), I've attempted to do this for over a month and mailed copies of documents and also faxed documents, but each time I sent something, their 'validation' team said it wasn't acceptable.
I sent them exactly what they requested. I have snail mail receipts, fax receipts, and copies of the materials that I sent. I spoke with tech support over a week ago and established a Ticket number for them to explain to me why I have a receipt that they received the material, but they said I did not send it. I've received no follow-up to that Ticket. The directions on the Quicken site and the directions on the QBP site on how to make the QBP transition from 'old' to 'new' contradict each other. I understand there may be growing pains since the Quicken brand switched ownership, but over a month to get a successful implementation of the product is unacceptable.
If my review were based on my past 20 years with Quicken, they would get 5 stars. Based on my recent experience, the star ratings available don't go low enough. I don't want a refund, I want a working suite of products.
I gave Quicken a try in 2015 and returned it within a week, due to it not supporting 2 of my investment brokerages. Fast forward to now: I figured I would give it a try again, as they finally support all of my brokerages.
I should have let well enough alone and kept using Excel. I'm now 2 weeks in and haven't yet figured out how to get budgeting to work properly. Rather than counting my true, net income (by the very obvious paychecks that hit my accounts every two weeks), Quicken is counting my gross salary and is forcing me to attempt to reconcile tax and deductions for each paycheck. This happens even after rebooting, restarting, etc, and checking only the 'Net Income' option for budgeting. Something is clearly broken here.
The inability to budget accurately is the main killer, for me. The numerous other bugs that plague the program didn't really kill it. I can handle bugs if the software is accurate, in the end.
But not being able to budget anything means I have to stick to Excel, or just go to one of the NUMEROUS free online programs that do Quicken's job better. All in all, I HIGHLY recommend that you go elsewhere. Maybe YNAB, or Personal Capital. Heck, even Mint is better than this unsupported, overpriced monstrosity of a program. Learn from my mistake. Heed the many warnings that lie all over Quicken forums across the web. Do not buy this!
Unfortunately, I can't return Quicken this time. Now, I have to figure out how to reconcile $140 in here. I'll see you in a month. Let's just get this straight.I HATE this new version.
I hate how Quicken makes you re-download new software every two years so you have to get used to new quirks, etc. It would be much easier if I could just pay to continue to get price and data updates on my old version that I am used to.but that isn't my real issue. My issue stems from the fact that the screen is horribly washed out, making it difficult to read at a quick glance. If you use the simple 'Use Large Fonts' under 'View', then the screen real estate gets preposterously large. There is an option under 'edit:preferences:register:fonts' to change the font and font size, which sounds good. So I change those and, indeed, it changes the font on my registers for 'banking' as well as 'property and debt' but the fonts do NOT change for the 'investments' registers, nor do they change on the 'account bar' or 'calendar view' on the home page. So functionally, I use those more than anything else.thus I am not helped by that functionality.
I have had three different chat sessions with their help desk. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the program. I have checked, unchecked, rechecked every box they recommend.nothing seems to work. Very, very frustrating.
I am now looking for a new personal finance software program where I can actually view what's happening in my portfolio!
© CreditDonkey Quicken set out to create a program that was at least comparable to its sibling, Quicken for Windows. Did it accomplish that goal? Many users don't think so, but they do recognize the improvements made in the program.
Quicken Mac Torrent
Some of the most important improvements made include:. A more user-friendly interface. More cohesiveness between mobile app and Quicken for Mac. More reporting options Did Quicken accomplish what they set out to do? Keep reading to find out.
How Does Quicken for Mac Work? One thing you should understand about Quicken for Mac: just likes its Windows counterpart, you must subscribe to the service.
The subscriptions are available in one and two-year increments. This means every year (or two years), you must renew your subscription. Quicken offers three versions for Mac users:. Starter: As the name suggests, it's a starter program, good for those who have never officially budgeted their finances. Don't expect any bells and whistles with this option. Deluxe: If you are ready for more, the Deluxe program helps you customize your budget, track your debt, manage your debt, and monitor your investments.
Premiere: The top tier program includes everything in Deluxe, plus online bill pay service (free of charge) and quicker access to customer service. Contacting Quicken: Quicken offers two ways to contact customer support:.
Phone support is available Monday - Friday, 5 AM to 5 PM Pacific Time. Live chat is available 24/7; you can see the wait time for an agent right on the website What Are the Fees? As we discussed above, Quicken is a subscription-based service. You will pay anywhere from $34.99 to $74.99 per year for the service. If you neglect to renew your subscription, you can still access your information, but you cannot use the program's services any longer. Converting from Quicken for Windows to Quicken for Mac Previously, Mac users had to run Quicken for Windows via VMWare Fusion or run an old version of Quicken for Mac.
This allowed them to run Quicken on a Mac without having a program made for Mac. These users who now pay for the Quicken for Mac subscription can move their Quicken files over to Quicken for Mac. Quicken does offer full support to help you transfer the files, no matter how many years of transactions you have going at the time of transfer.
Reasons We Like Quicken for Mac. You can sync your financial data between the desktop app and the mobile app. The Quicken mobile app is free and syncs with your desktop app. This way you can add, edit, or delete transactions on either device and they will synchronize the information so you are always looking at the most up-to-date data. You can easily reconcile your accounts.
If you don't reconcile your accounts, you may be using incorrect information. Reconciling is a feature in Quicken for Mac that is simple to use. It's like a system of checks and balances that lets you know the information you put into Quicken for Mac matches the information the bank provides.
Quicken for Mac provides visually appealing graphs and charts. Quicken for Mac is easier to navigate and read for users. You can view ledgers, graphs, or charts—whichever is the most appealing to you and will help you stay on track with your budget.

You can view all of your bills on the dashboard and/or you can download your bills in PDF format if you prefer to have a copy of the bill yourself. You can manage your investments. A new key feature of Quicken for Mac is the investments feature.
You can track your portfolio, get updated quotes, and track your profits. You can also see your cost basis, determine your capital gains, and prepare yourself for tax time. You can track your principal and interest on loans.
If you are trying to get ahead of your loans, you will like the loan feature in Quicken for Mac. You can see how your payments affect principal and interest.
You can also run 'what if' scenarios to see how different payments and scenarios would help you pay off your debt. You can use Dropbox for backups. Even though Quicken for Mac is on your local computer, you get access to 5 GB of online backup from Dropbox. This gives you a 'backup' of your financial information to ensure that you don't lose anything. You always have the latest updates. Because Quicken for Mac is subscription-based, you don't have to upgrade the product when new versions are released.
You'll automatically receive updates, which means you'll always have the latest features available to you. You don't lose access to your financial data even after your subscription ends. If you don't want to renew your subscription, you still have access to your financial data.
You can view it, edit it, or export it. While you can't use Quicken's features, you won't lose the information you collected while you did pay for the program. Quicken supports more than 14,000 financial institutions for automatic update of your financial information.
This is the same number of financial institutions Quicken works with for the Windows version, so Mac users are on the same wavelength as Window users in that regard. Reasons You May Want to Look Elsewhere. There is little difference between the Premier and Deluxe versions. The only differences are the online bill pay (free of charge) and faster priority for customer service. For many users, that may not be worth the extra $30 per year, especially when most banks offer free bill pay. Investment reporting still lacks features offered in Quicken for Windows.
While Quicken for Mac 2018 has dramatically better investment features, it still pales in comparison to Quicken for Windows' features. The main features that lag are in terms of reporting, which is the one feature many users want when looking at their investments. You have to pay for it every year. Quicken for Mac used to be a native program that you downloaded to your computer and used for as long as you wanted. If you wanted to use an old program, that was your prerogative.
Now you don't have that choice—you have to pay the subscription fee or you can't use Quicken for Mac. How It Compares QuickBooks for Mac: QuickBooks for Mac offers similar features to Quicken for Mac, but QuickBooks also caters to small businesses. Quicken is more for personal finance use. If you don't manage payroll or your business has simple financing needs, Quicken may suffice.
Businesses that need more robust financing options, though, may do better with QuickBooks for Mac. Quicken for PC/Windows: While Quicken for Mac made many improvements for 2018, it's still not the mirror image of that many users want. The navigation in the Windows version is still easier.
Also, the reporting options in the Windows version are more robust. Bottom Line If you can overlook the subscription fees for Quicken for Mac, it does pack quite a punch being a native program for Mac users. While it does lack certain features, it's a major improvement over the previous versions. With the subscription-based service, you do have the benefit of quick fixes when issues arise and always having the latest version at your fingertips.
